Lightbulb Google::: You can still sleep well.

That is the heading of this

Wolfram håller inte Google sömnlöst - Computer Sweden

Swedish article (that you can translated directly if you use the new Google toolbar or otherwise use Google translate).

Wolfram Research (the inventor of Mathematica) has always been one of my favorite mathematical sources. The company are now launching their own search engine:

Wolfram|Alpha

Theres some talk that the Wolfram search engine is going to be bigger that Google but I find that hard to believe. Just like firefox was going to be bigger than IE!

The only people claiming that it will be bigger than Google are people that don't understand it..

I did a quick test run on the wolfram search. I could not get it to search? . it is good at discovering the population of a town? . . I did not really understand it. I should mention that I am someone who does not think google is as big as google. Google is quite probably 20% habit, (that makes it less big)
Google to me has always been a pay per click site, simply because I am and adsense publisher . (this makes google less big)

My view. . Google is not as good a search engine as it looks. I do not think the perch it sits on is medium to long term solid.

But it certainly will not be me that will prophecy ' better search engine'. They all give me the shits. They are fundamentally flawed.

The biggest issue right now is the fact that it is an "alpha" release.. And people are judging it like it has been around for 10 years.. Back when I was a real programmer alpha meant "doesn't work"..

The people I know that are more involved on the research end of search and machine learning are impressed with this alpha and are excited to see where it leads.. I'm willing to give it a chance to evolve and reserve judgment for later..

And I agree, search engines have a long way to go.. They are terribly slow to update, even slower to drop pages that have been deleted or had their content deleted, and constantly place sites that are worthless (MFA) at the top or near the top of the results..

In this post, related to TrustRank, I have showed how I think the rel="nofollow"attribute could be used. It may indicate a first small step on the way to advanced semantic web linking (off topic link that should have the rel="nofollow"attribute).

Note:
the google SE is much more than algorithms. (Semantic link)

In my order of priority. It is:
  1. Financial strength. Money speaks.
  2. Innovative dynamic people that have understood the market potential of this industry.
  3. It is hardware (data centers).
You can not imagine how good Mathematica is before you see it. (Semantic third party link IMO).

I have high respect for the people that has made that program. (Semantic Link IMO, though WPW WebMaster: You can rel="nofollow" that and other links that may be regarded as promotion or partly off topic in this post).

The question is. Is that qualification enough to compete with and finally out compete Google? A similar setting: Opera that is my favorite browser (Semantic partly off topic link that may be rel="nofollow"(ed)) has had no chance against the major US engines. So long nobody has been able to prove to me that there is a better more secure SE for the surfer as I see it. And now Opera and the other web browsers are fast loosing market shares to the open source browser, Google Chrome that is marketed on their site and in their ad network.

Marketing is a type of drama (Sematic link that ought to have the rel="nofollow" attribute on it).

Today, if you shall be able to compete with Google in your niche, I see one possibility:

Google Custom Search Engine - Site search and more (Semantic link)

Google: Create a Custom Search Engine (Semantic link).

"What do you want to search?
Only sites I select. The entire web, but emphasize sites I select. The entire web.
Specify a list of websites to search. You'll be able to edit this list and add more sites later".

Specify a list of website (feeds) to search: That is related to TrustRank. (Semantic link)

But Google would have access to that code and use it as a subset in their algorithm.

From one of the videos (see my first post): "Make knowledge computable".

This JS snippet:

var linksInPage = document.getElementsByTagName('a');

produces an array of link elements.

There is much that can be done do with that array like setting it as a property of an object. The same can be done with any element (node) in the page.

Conclusion:
Some of "the worlds best" programmers and mathematicians (are they already employed by Google?) may be a necessary, but not sufficient condition to compete with Google.

I don't think That Wolfram will be bigger or even beat Google as a Search Engine..Many People will be going to Google because it is more reliable instead of that SE and the other SE..

But if may find its own niche. Try:

200*5-( 10*8 )

Wolfram|Alpha in the search box.

Wolfram is a different SE. Google, Yahoo, Altavista, MSN and different other
SEs has their own capabilities and features. The only difference is which SE
people will mostly go.. and we all know that Google is on top. But who knows
someday there will come up a SE that will surpass Google right? It's possible.
