Default domains that redirect to site

What is the best method to have similar domains redirect to your primary domain? For example if your website domain is supercoolstarwarstoysandstuff.com and you purchase similar domains such as supercoolstarwarstoysandstuff.net, coolstarwarstoys.com, etc then have these similar domains redirect to supercoolstarwarstoysandstuff.com from your Plesk control panel. (on a red had linux box) Will SE's such as Google be ok with this kind of redirect? I only have these secondary domains set up in my Plesk control panel with a checkbox selected for 'Redirect' and a field where I enter the name of the primary domain name that I want them redirected to. I was reading about using 301 redirects for when you have a website and you want it to redirect to another. I didn't know if 301s applied in this case.

thanks a lot,

eli

With the 301 redirects, the user would effectively land on the index page before being "bounced" to the intended site.

The 301 redirect is what you'd use if you wanted to move or replace an existing site that was already well indexed and that had several inbound links (IBL's). The 301 tells the search engines that you've moved the content permanently, and that you've changed the URL. That's really not what you want.

What you do want is called "domain forwarding" and you're already doing it right, probably because you're so clever! Just keep doing what you're doing.

I use Plesk as well and I do this on a ton of domains for a few sites I run. Works like a charm and there are no problems at all with the SE's.

I don't think google have any problem with 301 redirect. You can use it on your all that URLs.

Thanks a lot Dubbya.

I dont' know about me being clever, but I'm glad that I'm doing the 'domain forwarding' right.

Cheers!
