Default Listing Up and Then Down

I have a network of review sites all on one domain that is about 7 months old. We are getting a lot of page 1 listings on 3 and 4 word keywords but they are not remaining constant in any one position. We will go up to 2 or 3rd position and then move back down to 6-8. This is occurring in a lot of different categories.

Is this just the way Google works before eventually solidifying your position (for the time being)?

Once we start hitting the first page, should the page be left alone on the main content of the site or should we continue to update frequently?

Thanks,

Arthur

There's been a ton of movement particularly lately. I'm not sure what is causing it but I see it too and I'm guessing it's a tweak in the works.

It's fairly normal to fluctuate. Make sure you post fresh content. There are lots of new sites indexed daily and Google loves fresh content.

Your site needs to be relevant to the keyword your targeting.

Usually when your not relevant you fluctuate a lot like this.

There is no way to really solve this. Keyword stuffing and no relevancy will cause you to show for a bit, then back down again.

Try to make your site relevant for the keyword you are targeting.

Also try to add new features to your site which might incorporate something web 2.0.

Google does have its wobbles. You need to press on with link building and onpage optimisation of your site, and eventually you will establish yourself in a place eventually.

I recently had one where a website was jumping between page 1 and page 4 for 'sofas' - the customer was delighted since his campaign was way too small for it to deserve the page 1 position at all.

The Google Dance is just one of the realites of SEO, but it is a real pain in the neck sometimes. Biggest wobbles tend to be over the weekend, but there are also fluctuations during the week and more and more over the past 12 months in my experience.
