Default Google, Search for pages linking to

Since the last update, we dropped from the top 10 to the mid 100’s for our top performing key phrases.

It seems the problem is other pages linking to us. So I checked the sites that are in the top 10. Checking for sites linking to, by using link:www.whatever.com. Almost all the top sites show links that are just other pages at that domain.

Now if you check the links to our site, link:www.joliettech.com it returns 4 results. I understand this is not the full list.

So my question is, why does Google list pages from the same domain linking to itself? And, how can I get Google to do that for our site?

One more thing, the number 1 site is a re-direct, it goes to a page for about 3 seconds then re-directs to their home page. I have reported this to Google, for whatever that’s worth. This site has 117 links to their site, about 95% are pages at that domain and when you click on one of the links, re-direct.

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Try this:

allinurl:www.joliettech.com or
+"www.joliettech.com"

then underneath where you see one of your own pages, click on "[ More results from www.joliettech.com ]".

By the way, the second of those two search formats shows 204 links, although many of those are probably from your own site...

It also shows this:

WebProWorld :: www.quickstepjohn.com
... couple and I got "The page cannot be found". Good looking site, _________________

Ignore the link: in Google for finding backlinks - its is pretty meaningless. Google only returns a "sample" of backlinks and never all.

This won't be the reason for your drop in ranking.

Hey David,

Thanks for the quick response.

I have tried the other 2 formats, but I was using the link: format because that seems to return the biggest difference in results.

With the other 2 formats our back links are similar in numbers with the sites in the top 10. That's why I can't figure out why we dropped so far down in the results.

We are working on getting more links to us from other quality sites. In the meantime Adwords will have to do.

BYW, the site that was number 1, that I reported to Google, has dropped to around 210 and their site seems to be having some problems. Because I tried it today and got; The page cannot be displayed. So maybe reporting it to Google did some good.

Thanks again,

Hey CBP,

Thank you for your response.

If this is not the reason for our drop, I'm really at a loss why we dropped so far.

Our site is very focused and provides good information. We are still getting alot of hits from Google for all kinds of random key phrases. Just not the top 4.

If you have some other suggestions as to what we can do, I would appreicate it.

Thanks,
