Post Number of Backlinks dropped in Google. Why?

Hello all,

A few months back, my website had more than 1400 backlinks (Shown by Google) and its PageRank was also 6. Then my website’s PageRank was dropped to 5 and today I noticed that number of backlinks also dropped at 240. This is a big decline. Since quality backlinks increase your PageRank but my question is: Why I lost so many backlinks from other websites towards my website? Did Google changed its strategy to evaluating useful backlinks and assigning PageRank accordingly?

Your thoughts are highly welcome.

I think they had, I have noticed a drop of backlinks in 7 out of 10 sites I have

This month there have been plenty of changes, including visible page rank

You have to understand linking is not about linking to page A from page B. Link changes, demotion and bans can and do have a ripple effect that is seen far downstream. If Google decides to ban or demote a website and that website links to a website your getting links from, then you will feel the downstream ban/demotion by possibly losing backlinks and PR.

incrediblehelp is right, it's not about the number of links. It's about the quality of the links to your site.

Furthermore, you need to understand that Google does not show us the correct number of links that they know about; for a more accurate view of the links your site has I would verify your site in Google Webmaster Tools and look at the links there; or look at the backlinks in Yahoo!.
