New SitePending Verification in Google Webmaster Tools

I submitted this site Car Desktop Wallpapers - Car Photos, News, Information and Videos to my GWT account a few days ago but the verification status is still "pending". Googles system says that it experienced a "temporary problem" and it would try again later. I used the html file initially and have also used the meta tag. I have checked back a few times to find the status is still the same.

Today I have submitted another site for verification (a Wordpress blog) and this was verified straight away.

So, I am thinking now that there is a problem with the set up of the first site (hence the inclusion of the url) and would appreciate some advice abouit the problem GWT may be seeing. I have added an xml sitemap with about 700+ pages and the site is already ranked for the words in the month old domain name (I expect this to no longer be the case shortly). My error log file is clear at the moment. Both sites are on the same shared hosting.

Any ideas?

Thanks Webnauts, but the problem is with verification within GWT. GWT says there is a technical problem at their end, but I have now verified two other sites since then and they did not cause a problem, so there doesn't seem to be one, otherwise the verification of the other sites would have been unsuccessful.

Maybe the problem is within the code of my .htaccess file? Not sure if it is good idea to post it here, but I could send you a PM.

It sounds to me like google got confused. I think there is an option in the GWT console to create a new verification file. Try regenerating one and verifying with that instead.

As far as I have been able to ascertain, Google expects a 404 error when a page cannot be found and will not verify the site if this is not the case. The script I use served a 200 page success code, which was causing me the problem.

I have now had the script amended to ensure the a 404 error is delivered and the site has been verified.
