The first time I heard about Viacom suing Google was in this
http://www.surftoolbar.com/ : : Constructive feedback, please not on markup. also related thread.
Today the story was presented on the internet. Some even ask
if it will be the end of YouTube?
Some questions:
- What is the difference between indexing text and other media like audio and video? Is it that complete original songs are put on the site?
- What is the differnece between using a meta search engine or another engine collecting, indexing and presenting a subset on your own Ad driven pages?
- More generally, is there difference between aouthor rights and the rights of musicians and movie makers?
- Is the solution to pay for presenting information on the site and giving back payment to the original producer?
- Or can there be paid and free sections of the site?
- More specifically is the solution transcopyright or SE's based on copyright?
- Will payment solutions iinitiate segregation?
- How can paid and free content best live together on the internet to the best for all people independent of purchasing power and other criteria?
- Is it possible to forget the past and implement a new regime for the future?
P.S. If Viacom wins, that will start a lot of other similar claims to similar sites.
