Important page not indexed
I have been trying to optimize a particular page on my site for 4 months now, but Google just doesn't want to index it.
In Google webmaster tools I'm told that 42 out of 58 pages are indexed, but frustratingly this important page isn't.
The URL is: http://www.theweddingshop.co.uk/mother_of_the_bride/mother_of_the_bride.html
I wondered if the folder name and file name both being 'mother of the bride' would upset Google?

Well, could you change it to -say- MB, instead? Then see how that worked?

Re: Important page not indexed
Thanks for the quick reply Martin.
I've just noticed that Google has happily indexed a similarly named file in the same folder:
So it would seem it's happy with the naming.

Re: Important page not indexed
Too many pages with similar names...I'd change the one not indexed to MB.

Re: Important page not indexed
I dont see what the issue is here. Why do you want to change the names of folders or files? They matter so very little in the whole overall ranking formula.

Re: Important page not indexed
Check the content of the page, Google deindex the pages, having duplicate content.
I have checked your page through copyscape.com & it shows duplicate results.

Re: Important page not indexed
I usually agree with most of Jaan's comments, but not this time!
Filenames and folder names go a LONG way towards helping the relevancy of a pages' of content, AND this is both true for the END USER (strange as Jaan previously has told everyone to make your pages human readable) and for search bots.
IMO the folder name "mother_of_the_bride/" would be excellent, using "MB" would just be stupidity.

Copyscape is very handy, thanks for the heads-up. But, what should you do when somebody has blatantly ripped off your copy?

You can shout, scream and swear at them and send them legal letters - but all can be fruitless.
Often such trash is hosted on servers in countries where they could not careless. And its not just some lonely webmaster manually pasting in your pages it will be done automatically using scapers (crappy software that steals others content for use on spammy sites).
What you should do is make your own pages rank higher than any others using your content. This will ensure your pages show before any of these wasters pages...
Market your site and pages to improve your ranking. Try here for starters:

Re: Important page not indexed
seiretto, the point is if your pages are currently not using keywords in the file names then you probably dont want to switch them as the history they have earned is worth far more than adding the keywords. Anytime you consider switching any part of your URLs you have to be very careful.

Re: Important page not indexed
incrediblehelp, yes, agree if the existing pages have ranking. And is very important to remember when redesigning a site its best not to pull-down all pages replacing it with "we are having a make-over" or something equally pathetic (I have seen this done so many times not just by noobs but experienced designers too).
Os, if you are creating new pages/content then do use relevant filenames and folder names like:
"/mother_of_the_bride/"
But this IMO seems overkill and a bit spammy:
/mother_of_the_bride/mother_of_the_bride.html

Yes, it does look a bit of an eyeful.
Perhaps I should have just named the HTML file 'index.html' in that folder, and just linked to 'theweddingshop.co.uk/mother_of_the_bride' ?
I'll try and keep my white hat on now.
