Red face Google the Juggler

Hello All,

I have been observing a quite strange phenomenon on Google in the recent few months.

Google results sometimes goes into spin, and it starts to display ranking data 3-4 months old.

Most of the new webmasters get confused over this issue and post messages on forum reporting fluctuation in rankings.

Their rankings show a drop and several users/clients report low rank, whereas it is just a reverse mode of Google.

This thing was prevalent way back in 2005-2006 which used to last 3-4 days, but these days Google drags old results for as long as 5-10 days.

I would like to know if you have observed this strange ranking results from Google.

I have seen this too. I tend to think of it as 'rolling rankings' - I think google is just doing this on purpose so that their results don't get 'stale'

The problem is little complicated thats why it was bit difficult for me to explain in detail.

The biggest problem is that when Google search results go into rewind mode, it gets really mind boggling to perceive whether it was a drop in rankings or something else.

During this phase clients start reporting that their rankings have dropped, whereas Google has only gone into rewind phase.

There is absolutely no mechanism to detect when search engine results go into rewind mode. The worst part is that your cache results show latest crawl, whereas Google displays ranking results, which is a snapshot of your rankings 2-3 months ago. This behaviour can stay as long as 5-10 days, and it is the worst phase of your optimization efforts where you are put into rewind mode.

This is the reason why I posted here to find out if anybody observed this behaviour, and is there is any technique to detect whether Google search ranking results are current or in rewind mode ?

4. Are you familiar with Google Previous Query? It can help explains these shifts as well.
Google is also demoting paid links often now which can greatly change the SERP landscape.

Thanks for the update. I will go through them. Meanwhile, I have observed this instability has been increasing rather than decreasing.

Search engines are supposed to become more efficient, but sometimes they start displaying rankings which are 2-3 months old. I tried to access from various datacentres, but several of them were in reverse mode. This temporary reverse rankings phase used to stay for 1-5 days, but it seems to be increasing over the past few months.

thanks for your reply

There is a difference between apples and oranges.

IMO, SERP position is definitely a better term than ranking that I relate to page rank.

Two good threads on pagerank (IBL's and OBL's).

Is PageRank the Primary Google Search Ranking Factor?

Can inbound links really hurt you?

Google the Juggler

I am still
