That's the consequence of Google's very questionable decision to start treating subdomains as directories of the second level domains. Wrong IMO, this should be determined from case to case.

I am sorry, I have mixed groups.google.com with Google's blogspot.com, which doesn't take away may statement about the subdomains. It is very obvious with blogspot or e.g. wordpress, which are widely abused.

Regarding groups.google.com I was surprised they didn't release it earlier fully into the serps, as they deserve it.
