Wrong Keyword, Wrong Site leading to Wrong Traffic: Please Advice
Hi guys,
Im new to this forum but not so new for seo. But lately i have encountered this extremely confusing problem (atleast to me). I wont disclose the actual name or keywords for privacy reasons. I need your advice on "what could be the reason". Thanks before hand. ok here it goes....
I checked the stats of my client's website and found out that during last month, the highest number of visits were originating from a keyword totally irrelavant to our site. I checked the sources and found out yahoo, msn, live and then google were sending the traffic.
I tried all kind of stuff to my knowledge ranging from keyword in the content, anchor links, anchor texts, link pop on all the SEs, manually checked results for the keyword, hidden spammy stuff...but nothing so far...
Will start the Adwords campaign soon but want to get back the organic traffic back on honest track.
Solve this puzzle for me digging deep into your SEO brains
Thank you

Re: Wrong Keyword, Wrong Site leading to Wrong Traffic: Please Advice
If you do a search for the keyword yourself, does your site come up?
I use a log analyzer that shows me what page of the SERPs visitors come from, and what term, and a few months ago I noticed an incredible number of visits from the first page of MSN, for the search term "Florida". I couldn't figure out why, and when I did the search myself I couldn't find my site in the listings. After looking at the various IPs I noticed that they were all similar, some sort of bot activity that I since blocked. It is possible you are encountering a similar situation.

Re: Wrong Keyword, Wrong Site leading to Wrong Traffic: Please Advice
Just taking into accout the TLD of ".tv" and the observation that the "pocket fisherman" would also have at least one TLD of ".tv" I can see where some traffic may head your way but that is the only relationship I can see. It really does not make too much sense even with that.
I think the bot idea may be more relevant.

Someone probably links to you using that phrase in anchor text.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. Checked that as well but no use.
Like me I guess most of the SEOs on this forum are dumb struck as well.

Check this site:
Pocket Fisherman
Look at the link for "Customer Service"
mailto:info@asseenonpc.com?Subject=Pocket Fisherman ---- Customer Service
As both sites belong to you, it is strange you don't know more about this.

Re: Wrong Keyword, Wrong Site leading to Wrong Traffic: Please Advice
activeco,
i agree that it is my site as well but that does not mean my weightloss site should be anyway linked to the keyword "pocket fisherman". And the thing you pointed out is just contact with a subject line, is it relevant to our investigation. I'm trying to find out the connection that keyword is building up on SEs with my weightloss site. If the think you are refering is true, then my pocket fisherman site should be found for keyword "weightloss"? right? its not like that though...
again the question remains, why search engines are sending traffic to my weighloss website through a keyword un-optimized and not ranked at all.
Thank you again activeceo...

Re: Wrong Keyword, Wrong Site leading to Wrong Traffic: Please Advice
I read a news article today about a new messenger hijacker that is causing banners to be displayed on user's browsers unrelated to their searches. This one just came out and most of the malware tools have not caught up to it. This may not be the case for your situation but is just one more bug in the works.

Re: Wrong Keyword, Wrong Site leading to Wrong Traffic: Please Advice
I dont think that browser hijacker is the cause. Yahoo is the top most SE which is sending traffic for the wrong keyword. Do you think a "temporary redirection" is taking place? i mean a 302? because all SEs have that page indexed (dont know which one) and sending considerable amount of traffic. Meaning it is not that deep burried in their respective indexes, people are finding it and clicking as well......

Re: Wrong Keyword, Wrong Site leading to Wrong Traffic: Please Advice
In the meantime why don't you just use it and redirect such requests to the right domain?

Have you ever had content on the weight loss websites about "pocket fisherman" or have you ever had any linking/redirects between to the domains?

Interesting client you have there kevin trudeau - Google Search
But about the problem you´re stating,... How are you measuring all the traffic to the various websites? Could you have misplaced some tracking codes which causes the wrong data to show up for the wrong domain?

Re: Wrong Keyword, Wrong Site leading to Wrong Traffic: Please Advice
Hi,
Incredible no such kind of redirect has been made. No doorway or landing page was programmed that way either. This could be a competitor as well, working on the redirection. What do you think about affiliate network error? is there any chance of that?
Peter, im using GAnalytics and have other projects there as well. I have tried to check different reports but no such kind of cross campaign blunders or confusions visible.
Im sticking to my Q, why Yahoo? are there more pages indexed in it and all redirecting to the wrong site for the wrong keyword? affiliate error? competitor mischief? or our own error?
????

Re: Wrong Keyword, Wrong Site leading to Wrong Traffic: Please Advice
Did the pages/domains ever link together? What about the back links? Could or do you have back links pointing to this website with the text "pocket fisherman"

Re: Wrong Keyword, Wrong Site leading to Wrong Traffic: Please Advice
The only thing I see is the footer on both the Pocket fisherman and weightloss sites both have links with the text customer service pointing at the exact same mailto:link with the only difference being the subject. IMO, change the link text to reflect the site or spend a buck or two and send it to a different email address. Essentially that mail link is the same addresss as I believe the subject attribute is not a true mailto attribute and maybe Google ignores that attribute and sees them as the same link?

Are you sure you are using for each site a unique GA script? Are you sure that on the site we are talking about your are using the right script?
