Default Domain Name Length < 26

Hello,

Does anyone have thoughts on the seo effect when domains are over 26 characters long. A quick look at top rankers for various keyword phrases in the SERPS shows the top 10 with domain name length under 26. I am including the ".tld" in the count but not "www.".

As I would think that the keyword phrase "miami real estate" is a very sought after one, a search on G shows the number 5 site with way over the 26 chars. So it would seem that domains over 26 can get a high SERP.

I dont see an issue with getting rankings with domain over 26 characters, but for branding reasons why would you want this? Building a company is not only about SEO.

I agree with Jaan here. Yes, getting keywords in your domain can help, but having a short, concise and memorable domain is more important in my opinion.

My view on this is one of creating a site with the highest possible SERP. If I build a site for lets say a apartment community located in timbucktoo with a name of "ABC apartments": I would suggest possibly two sites. One would be "ABCApartments.tld" and the other would be "TimbucktooApartments.tld". The "ABCApartments.tld" would contain a general overview of the complex, contact, etc. The "TimbucktooApartments.tld" would be a site for people who were not familiar with "ABC Apartments" but were searching for apartments in timbucktoo. This approach in my opion would allow my client the highest possible search results and success.

My question to you would be if you had a client with a business name "Citi" and they wanted to have high search results for "mortgage" which domain would you suggest?

This is not true in all the cases.

Example: Search for low cost web hosting company in Google, the 4th listing is webhosting-domainregistration.com, the url count is more than 26 characters.
