Default Locating broken links in a site.

Inside webmaster tool a site has 29 links under not found list. The site has around 500 pages, so searching for these not found links is bit tedious job. I thought why google is not displaying the url of the pages where it located ( or found ) these broken links, this will help rather than showing the broken links itself.

Is there any other way to find out the location ( or origin ) of these broken links ?

  1. That is a good, but not good enough tool.
  2. Some links that are reported as broken are not.
  3. There are problems with URL's that have changed. So you may not forget to inspect a broken link manually.
  4. When you link to a site link to http: // example dot com and not to http: // example dot com + whatever. That is not possible if you link to articles. Sometimes there are permanent versions of links like posts on WPW. Click permalink in the upper right corner of posts.
  5. If you link out. Some links may have changed to a spam site.
  6. Remember: Hypertext Style: Cool URIs don't change.
  7. Example: The website of the world's first-ever web server

  • Checks both absolute (http://www.yoursite.com) and relative (../yourpage.htm) links
  • Checks for broken in-page links (e.g. yourpage.htm#top)
  • Checks for broken links to other pages on your site (e.g. yoursite/yourpage.htm)
  • Checks for broken links to other sites (e.g. othersite.com)

The link is broken when you require a report

Nothing better than producing a manually manageable link base supported by the LinkSleuth for automatically surveillance.

Link Sleuth is reasonably good under most situation for a standard site. The problem starts if you have a large site and the pages are generated dynamically. With little network latency, it fires a rapid fire request for many pages at the same time - bringing the server to its knees resulting in a time out error. You can set a reasonable time limit in the Options though.

That is not all. If your page links are rewritten using mod_rewrite in apache, the end results are very convoluted when looking for broken links. A custom 404 solution with a log file might provide a better solution.

If you have AWStats, look at the report about "Pages not found" (go to "HTTP Status codes", then click on "404"). It shows a list of 404's and the last referrer for each non existing URL.

If you own the site(and can add an empty text file) you can find broken links or create a site map at:
