Default Question about positioning on google and multiple computers

I have been doing research on one of our sites.

The question I have is that it seems that different computers show our site ranked everywhere from number three to page four. Is this a common thing?

My search term is Hypnosis and Hypnosis.ORG is the URL of the site.

Could you guys do a search and see what position it comes up for you?

Thanks,
John Paul

I'm on the east coast and your site is #34 at Google for hypnosis.

It is possible that, depending on your geography, you may be seeing different data center returns. I've been on the phone with clients where the clients in New England saw what I saw, but the ones in Texas showed different rankings.

I suppose it would make sense for Google to serve up the most relevant in the searcher's geographical area first - although that doesn't explain why hypnosis.com, which is in Hawaii, is coming up as #1 on my search...

Could be the Google dance, then. Google could be in the process of updating its data centers so sometimes you get results from one center, sometimes another. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

You are # 8 from where I sit. I used Scroogle Scraper to check. I use that because it doesn't allow Google to see who is searching. Google does return higher results of pages you've clicked on before because it assumes you liked it ... this is the trend of personalization. So, yes, it will come up differently on different computers and in different browsers depending on previous user behavior.

If you don't have a paid subscription to one of the tracking services there are a couple you might want to try.

Google Rankings is great if you have a Google SOAP API (must be a SOAP API which can no longer be obtained) ... this site is great because it checks up to 1,000 results. And it will check Yahoo, MSN, and Ask for you at the same time.

And another WPW member introduced this one to the forum yesterday:
SheerSEO - ... I tried it and liked it ... and you can sign up (for free) and get email reports ...

Hope this helps, MJ

I have you at 11 on Scroogle and 33 on Google coming from a Google free browser.
So it appears different Data Centers are displaying different results.
Funny though just a quick check using http://www.seochat.com/?go=1&option=...google-search/
you show up #7 on the first twelve DCs.
Best I can figure is Google is shuffling the index right now and your
SERPS are either improving or falling depending on where you were previously.
I wouldn't obsess about it too much unless you traffic from Google has change dramatically. Give things a couple of weeks to settle down and check into it again.
This also might be a sign that the annual pre-holiday Google shake down is under way.

The index is shuffling. 3 days ago I added a new item to our site. Yesterday I received an order for that item. I checked where it came from and we were #5 on page 1 for the item. Today it's not in the top 120 I just checked.

Stuff like this makes you want to advertise to keep on the first page. Ahhhhh!!!!!!! This boosts revenue for them.

PS I have you at #33

Thanks for those links, I found them helpful in explaining why my traffic isn't converting as highly as it was a few months back. VERY different results, and I have to now figure out what to do about it!

Oops, SheerSEO doesn't work on Wordpress Sites, or at least not mine, which are all running anti comment spam plugins.

Glad they are helpful, BJ.

I am seeing different results for hypnosis from different points, too ... from 8 to 100 depending on whether I use GoogleRankings, Scroogle or Google with my Gmail and varying from time to time ... so it would seem there is a shuffle of some sort going on ... I am not going to look at my sites, I am going to relax this evening and worry about it tomorrow.

Today in the Delaware Valley (at least in Bucks County) you were #38 in the morning and #34 this afternoon. Guess Google recognized me on the return visit. It is interesting to see the different results from the different data centers.
