i can only solve you problem regarding to know how many pages are in supplemental stage. I suggest you to download a Firefox add-on entitled SEO for Firefox. there you will determine how many pages there in a supplemental index. regarding how to avoid having supplemental content, you must have an original content and as much as possible write in a long content or post or article.

For smaller sites, the only way to to this is with a search in the following format:

site:yourdomain.com -xyz:yourdomain.com

xyz is a "fake" operator, you could also use allinurl or abc or whatever. I think using a fake query causes certain databases not to be queried, or causes queries to be limited to the current datacenter.

This query returns only the pages that are not in the supplementals. For small sites, this is fine, but if you have hundreds or thousands of pages, it can be impractical to determine the status of a particular page, although you can try specifying a directory in the site parameter.

SEO for Firefox seems to be using an old, deprecated query to show the number of pages in the supplemental results, and now returns the total number of pages in Google's full index, at least on the couple of sites I tested.

I have 650 pages in the main index, and 36,000 in the supplementals, and still perform pretty well for both highly competitive and long-tail queries.

I think some pages in the supplementals are to be expected, and a more important benchmark is how well your site performs for your keywords.

For an example, I looked at Matt Cutts' blog, and saw that approximately 1/3 of his pages were in the supplementals.

First, being in the supplemental index isn't a bad thing - you will still be found in Google searches.

Second, you can get an estimate of how many of your pages are supplemental this way:

1. Use the site:domain.com query
2. The use this query - site:domain.com/*

The difference in the number of pages returns is (allegedly) the number in Supplemental.

Supplemental Pages

Common Causes of Supplemental Pages:
  • Duplicated content;
  • Too much content similarity;
  • Pages with low or no content;
  • Orphaned web pages. Pages that no one links to, including yourself;
  • Error pages, if a site does not use If-Modified-Since, Last Modified and/or Expires rules;
  • Poor website navigation;
  • Pages due to canonicalization problems;
  • Too low PageRank;
  • Long URLs, especially with long parameters, starting with a question mark (?) and being separated with an ampersand (&) and are not rewriten;
  • Suspicious pages for spamindexing, like non-unique and irrelevant to page content meta tags, or linking to bad neighborhoods, etc.
Supplemental Pages Results

A. To find the total number of pages indexed by Google from your website:
Code:
http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Adomain&filter=0
B. To find the total number of pages of your web site in the main index of Google:
Code:
http://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Adomain+-inallurl%3Adomain&filter=0

Supplemental Pages Results Ratio

To estimate the supplemental results ratio you must calculate:
100 x B / A = Non-supplemental pages.
100 - Non-supplemental pages = Supplemental pages results ratio in %.
