Is Google updating PR and BL? My client's sites have fallen in some keywords and come higher for some. Can anybody tell me if any new factor is there that Google is concentrating much on? I can see PR is getting more importance in the new SERP.

I have tested it for some of the keywords. The sites appearing in the sponsored link section are pushed down in the SERP. Has anybody else noticed this Or, I am getting mad with the changes?

Can you please first explain how could you see that PR is getting more importance in the new SERP?

Actually our site was appearing at #1 and it has PR 0. But now, all high PR sites are there in the first SERP and our site has been dropped, its nowhere in first 20 results!
Though I mentioned it as site, it is a category page just 3 months old, with less number of backlinks. When we created the page, it got some good links over night from some good Press Release sites and news papers. That's it, no incoming links after that. So can you predict any reason why it has been dropped suddenly? Last edited by saikatblogger; 09-04-2007 at 02:12 AM. |

I can only tell that google is tweaking their filters and getting more strict. That requires a manual review.

I do see some 'everflux' changes ... just a bit of more than usual shuffling ... nothing dramatic ...

Thanks for your input. The story goes like this: we started appearing at #1 for a competitive keyword. Then suddenly I can see we are nowhere for that keyword. However, we are still appearing for some other keywords that we targeted.
We never ran any link campaigns. The page has got some directory links and links from articles, press releases and forums. The keyword I am talking about is a 2-words phrase, each of the words are present in the content of the site, however, it was not listed as a phrase anywhere in the content. So can that be a reason? |

same thing happened to me! my keyword ranked for about 3 months in # 1 then it drops to 23 and never return and stays on 3rd page. Maybe google updates on the site gain great backlinks using your targeted keywords as anchor text!

Very normal ... a new site or new page zooms right up to Page 1, hovers for a few days, weeks, a month or two and then drops ... give it more links and more time and it will climbback up. I always take that initial zoom as the true potential of the page.
Why does this happen? Google seems to have some sort of skepticism about new sites/pages built into the algo ... they want to see age, organic link building, stability, updates ... etc.

Thanks for the information...
What link building strategy would you prefer for a technical (software/web apps) site? The options that we have: 1. Directory submission: is it valid? there are hundreds of directories, do you think all those are good? 2. Article submission: we can prepare good articles and get it published in article directories like ezinearticles, goarticles. how much effective are multiple links from same domain? 3. Review: trying to get reviewed by community sites. 4. Niche-specific articles: we are trying to develop niche-specific articles for 3rd parties and get a link back. how does that sound? any more options? |

saikatblogger , Google is always updating. In fact, the last blog post I made on my blog made it into the top 5 search results for many different related keywords...they're always updating the search results.
For link building, I would first get a Yahoo! directory listing. Then, try submitting to the major directories and write some articles. Get those articles into major online publications (even Web Pro News if it's appropriate) and don't worry about article "directories". You might try going to reviewme.com and seeing if you can buy a few reviews from major bloggers in your niche topic. I would also make sure you have a blog on the site or the ability to add articles...then use social media optimization to get those articles noticed.

As Bill said rankings are in not stagnant anymore. Forget that idea. Also updating of PR and BL shouldn't be thought to always coincide with ranking changes. If you think that you will drive yourself crazy.

What sort of updating is not known to me....as the Google toolbar PR for my site has jumped from PR3 to PR4, but the SERP dropped like anything..no traffic from GOOGLE.
