Thumbs up Page Rank Confusion

One of my main sites has a Google page rank of 4/10 on the index page. The Extreme Ezine :: Where Internet Marketing is Our Life (index.html) I use that main index page as a squeeze page and my second main page The Extreme Ezine :: Where Internet Marketing is Our Life (indexx.html) has a page rank of 5/10. I was told by a website designer that I was making a mistake using a second 'home' page as my site's main intro page. The page ranks have been the same for months and I'm wondering if I should expect a correction later. Also, can I consider my site a PR5 site?

One, Why do you have 2 pages? Are you using one for PPC landing page? I'd ditch one of them, as they could be confusing to your customers. (clicking 'Home" on the footer doesn't essentially take them to where they initially entered).

Two, if you're converting your visitors and you're happy with the results, I suggest that you don't worry about PR. It's rubbish.

Can't see why not to call it a PR5. I've never seen this before, but nothing in Google's description of PR discounts it. Theoretically, you could have a PR1 homepage and a PR10 internal page.

Google uses at least three PageRank concepts:
  • Green toolbar.
  • Internal.
  • Directory.
You are as far as I can see talking about the first cathegory.

Of course PageRank is important. It is an indication of how central your site is in the global World Wide Web. How many threads lead to your site / page. Links are a vote like citations in a litterature list that was the concept that inspired Brin and Page.

In my view you should make one (in your view the most important) the index page and link to the other on a central place. PageRank is also nonlinear (logarithmic) so it is more difficult to go from pagerank 5 to 6 than from 3 to 5.

But like everythink, it can be spammed and manipulated.

There is a similar canonical issue problem.

You have a great oppertunity to do some A/B split testing. See A/B Split Testing

PR is worthless. Work at improving the opinion of your visitors, PR cannot measure that.

In my view a too simple test to decipher a too complicated unknown algorithm.

Improving the opinion of your visitors is about being cited (read linked to). PageRank is a (delayed metric) to measure that. There is a trade off between:
  • Constantly improving content on your site.
  • Making people aware of your content.
SEO is among other things, finding the optimal combination and not the maximal one of the above two elements.

Who shall cite you if you sit in inner nowhere land writing great content? I will give you one of my own focused link collections that may be very valuable for people interesting in Web 2.0, AJAX and last but not least the XML family of technologies, namely the link in the upper right corner of the first link in my signature.

Learning XML, XSL and XLink etc. can be very useful for the next stage in building web pages.

Related thread:
The XML family of technologies will revolutionize web linking etc.

KW's:
  • Transforming xml data / documents to other data / documents using XSLT.
  • Keeping up with the last development of PHP and XML related parsers and libraries (you can use PHP (user defined) functions in the XSL language). Extensions and libraries are already written for you.
  • Getting an edge on your competitor using more flexible, artistic and creative web linking schemes using XLink.
  • Make an XML driven site and CMS without using a database, that may have SEO advantages.
  • Better know how you can make great web applications using technologies like Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX).

In most of the inner pages the link to home page is given to indexx.html.

Thats the reason why PR is more to indexx.html instead of index.html.

But
  • Where do you want people to land?
  • Where do you want PR to flow?
  • Where do you want people to stay?
  • Where are your main navigation?
  • Where are your sitemap?
