Default TLD vs Subdomain Age Factor

Since older more established domains are preferable when it comes to search engine positioning, how do add-on sub domains figure?

If you have a 10 year old domain name and add a new sub domain to it, does the new sub domain carry the weight of the elderly TLD or does it start out without that built-in age weight?

You will probably get different answers for this, but I feel it is the same as adding a folder. In both cases the new document will need to be optimized and get some back links.

But I think that since it's a domain off the trusted 10-year old domain, you could make links from that subdomain valuable much quicker.

You are absolutely right Jaan, because in the Domain Name System (DNS) hierarchy, a subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain.
