This may well be answered somewhere deep in the bowels of the Google FAQs but I can't find it ...
We have just bought an existing business with an existing website, domain and all. We have renamed the business and created a new domain name. However, we spent quite a bit of money on "goodwill" and we want to continue to pick up business from the old site while running the new one. The old domain name is now a copy of the new site, both on the same server. What is the best way to go about this? Do I shift the site to a new server and keep the same content on two sites, or is there a better way of avoiding the wrath of the all powerful search engines? Thanks, Mike |

301 redirect all the old sites pages to the associated pages of the new site. The rankings will take a dive but should come back up again.

There's gotta be a better way. I was lucky once, i just let google find all the dead links of my old site and pick up my new site and he/she (google) loved me. That worked well didn't it?

Moving to a new host & new domain..
See the section: 'Moving to a different domain' (below the 'Step 5'). Note the opening sentence: "All other things being equal, I would recommend to stay with the original domain if possible.". |
