Default New business name - new domain name - same content

This may well be answered somewhere deep in the bowels of the Google FAQs but I can't find it ...

We have just bought an existing business with an existing website, domain and all. We have renamed the business and created a new domain name. However, we spent quite a bit of money on "goodwill" and we want to continue to pick up business from the old site while running the new one.

The old domain name is now a copy of the new site, both on the same server. What is the best way to go about this? Do I shift the site to a new server and keep the same content on two sites, or is there a better way of avoiding the wrath of the all powerful search engines?

Thanks,

Mike

301 redirect all the old sites pages to the associated pages of the new site. The rankings will take a dive but should come back up again.

Gosh. 301 redirects can take a long long time depending on how many pages you have and they don't always work well do they?

There's gotta be a better way. I was lucky once, i just let google find all the dead links of my old site and pick up my new site and he/she (google) loved me.

That worked well didn't it?

Moving to a new host & new domain..

See the section: 'Moving to a different domain' (below the 'Step 5').
Note the opening sentence: "All other things being equal, I would recommend to stay with the original domain if possible.".

If you must switch domains 301 is the clear solution.

Default 301 redirect

301 redirects do work. I had to change some of my URL's to rank better and 301 redirects did the trick.
