Main keyword gone in SERPS

our optimized single key word has gone in the SERPS completely.
All other phrases are there and ranking well in all the engines.
What went wrong? how can we show for the one keyword that we used to rank no 5 then progressively down until we disappeared!

So many things could be wrong it hard to know without the domain name.
