Default Google is a Joke!

Google has just released their Page Ranks. Most of my sites dropped in ranking, why, is anyone's guess. All have original content and lots of it. One site, a site that uses expletives went from 0 to a 4!! Go figure!

But this has proved my theory that it is a waste of time worrying about Google's infamous page rank. What a Joke! Instead of worry about page ranks, it would be much more profitable optimizing your site to get into the top ten results of the serps.

Getting more visitors is far more important than a page rank. All my sites have dropped to a PR of 2 and 1, except the expletives site which got a 4. But all those sites are in the top 20 of the search results in Google, Yahoo and MSN!

Forget page rank and concentrate on getting more visitors, for your peace of mind and bank balance.

Default Acerbic Aussieness

Xen2,

I like your Aussie brashness. However, I wouldn't say that Google PageRank is a joke. In my opinion the PageRank bar needs distinguishing from the PageRank system. The former is still in a state of flux. The latter seems to be functioning within normal parameters. With a few exceptions - one is Google.co.uk.

Thanx for the input. My Aussie brashness can get me into trouble at times, but serves me well on an average.

I really cannot see why people are so concerned about Google's page rank, when they need to be concentrating on getting bums on seats in their sites! Google, as I hope we all know, is a popularity contest and I was never popular in school! A site with crap on it, with a high PR site incoming will get a good PR and has been proven time and time again. So why is it so important?? I think the whole Google popularity contest and page ranks are a joke and a complete waste of time and effort.

But hey, if people want to focus on it, then knock ya selves out!!

Default Circumspection

Xen2,

much more circumspect. Agree with your sentiments. Traffic with the potential to convert into customers (or whatever you're looking for) is the objective.

Good original content and links from topic related sites is the key to getting them. Google remains the key search engine for sourcing traffic, regardless of what number is shown on your PageRank bar.

Well I hate to disagree with a fellow Mod here at WPW - But I suggest that David should go further on this topic. Toolbar PR is not only a joke - it is an insult to any serious SEO discussion. Toolbar PR is a 'reflection' of the site 3 or 4 months ago and has no baring on your current SERP and to base your SEO tatics based on out of date - unreliable data is not in your best interests.

CTABUK,

you'll notice I'm very careful to distinguish between the PageRank toolbar and the PageRank system. The toolbar has previously been credited with powers well beyond those ever claimed by Google and its patent. As Mike Grehan's 18 month old article points out (your link) people had spuriously relied on toolbar PageRank to define price points for trading links. I would agree wholeheartedly with Mike's comments. Indeed my previous remarks regarding content and topic relevance share the same sentiments.

My own circumspection prevents me referring to Google as a joke. The toolbar rankings may now be both inaccurate and for SERPs purposes irrelevant. However, the PageRank system remains remarkably robust.

Cool - in fact Google does not own the toolbar system - but that is old hat.

Me too, my domain has thousands of backlinks, but got no PR update, while most of the inner pages without backlinks, updated from PR0 to PR4.

PR is useless only if you want to sell links on higher PR pages. We shall focus on SERPs and traffic.
