Default Google Infrastructure status by Matt Cutts

The latest post (update on what's happening at Google) on Matt's blog makes for some interesting reading.

Some of the topics he covers are:

- PageRank

- updates to the data for the related:, link: and info: operators

- "fresher" supplemental results

- "Having urls in the supplemental results doesn't mean that you have some sort of penalty at all"

There's a bit more - read the full post at

Default update

Thanks mantaweb...

I wondered what was happening....PR went to zero for a day....then got a backlink update...then PR back to normal and pr spread to some internal pages - for the first time! Quite a lot happening for us - for a relatively small update according to Matt.

I thought this bit was interesting -

'Having urls in the supplemental results doesn’t mean that you have some sort of penalty at all; the main determinant of whether a url is in our main web index or in the supplemental index is PageRank.'

So what he's saying is that your PR determines how many page will appear in the main index and therefore how many go to supplemental index. I've heard rumours of this but didn't know that it was official. So presumably this means true pagerank not just toolbar rank?

Also he seems to be suggesting that the SI will be used more - they are not dead and gone but may get into the serps. Be interesing to see what folks think of this. All sounds like positive news - fresher results and more, regular updates.

Finally thanks for all advice form mods and posters over past year - I've used the suggestions and managed to get some pages out of SI - will keep following SEO suggestions to improve our ranking.

Regards westie

funny the link to matt's blog in the email gives three malware pages...
Guess someone at WPW has had their system hacked.... and it is the supposed link to Matt Cutt's blog which is classic.
