Hi Mark, I think setting up your blog on www.blogger.com is the best option. Firstly, it's free n secondly, it's google's service.

Yes, blogs do rank well in the search engines.
For more info. log on to blogger n get ur thing going.

Regards

Wordpress is excellent with SEO. Plus you get to have it on your own domain which is a huge plus.

FYI, there are no advantages to being on blogger as some would suggest. You don't get a boost of any kind.

+1 for wordpress. You do need to go in and tweak the files a little or get one of the plugins that allow you to assign meta tags, etc.. But an updated wordpress blog will do pretty well.

I would stay away from blogger. Why build up the content of aomeone else jsut to save a few bucks on hosting expenses. If you post something that someone does not like or if you post to much then you run the risk of getting your blog deleted and then you lose all your work. Perhaps you can start again as long as you save all your posts, but it still takes time to set everything back up. Plus if you get popular then you want to be able to really capitalize on that success.

I use Blogger for my blogs, and some of my client's blogs, and yes it is free, and yes you ftp it to your site and not host with them. They also have new software out that seems to be much better as far as features go, though I haven't used it much yet.

I do wonder why so many think WordPress is so great. The customization of their templates is not as easy as with Blogger.

Would love to hear opinions as this is always a topic that comes up with clients.

I'm not that familiar with WordPress. Why is it considered more SEO friendly?
