An essential part of your job? Really? Why don't you use Firefox, if only just to get the page rank info...

How can this be essential to your business when it only updates every three months?

Anyway, IE7 is beta software, how can you expect third party software to work with it yet when they haven't released a public version yet?

Use the firefox extension which should work just fine for you.

Im not interested in getting into an argument about the application or importance of page rank. I just want the thing to work again! I've uninstalled IE7 and now back with 6 but still no page rank for anything!? Im a internet marketing salesman and use page rank quite a bit!

You may be screwed. Once IE7 changes registry entries it makes it hard to go backward. IE7 is a *BETA* so you can't very well expect it to work perfectly with all your tools, nor can you expect that anyone will jump through hoops to make it, since they have more important things they're working toward than PAGE RANK.

I'd suggest downloading Firefox and the SEO extension if this is so important to you. Hell, you might even get to see the web the way web developers intended . . . ;)

I wouldn't know if system restore would work. I don't use that insecure piece of manure called IE except to test websites I build. And I seldom run it when I'm actually online, since I value the integrity of my computer.

Why don't you ask the "dude on the table opposite" you how he got it to work . . .

I use IE7 Inertia and as I recall, I had to select the option on the toolbar to show pagerank because it didn't go on automatically.

I'd like to tell you how I did it but I'd have to reinstall it again... and, well, you know.

Good luck.

Trouble is 90% of surfers are just normal people which use the default explorer browser. So it makes sense to make sure that you site works with it.

Your stats are wrong. According to all three of my websites, IE use is down to around 60% and falling. Couldn't fall fast enough for me. Yes I hack for the dang broken browser but I wish I didn't have to, and IE7 promises more of the same.

Arent your 3 site based around web dev? if that is the case then your stats must be wrong, only people in the web industry really change their browsers.

Ive based the 90% on my customers who run non web dev related business's like flower shop's, garages and law firms.

perhaps your stats are right for that field of user.

it would be interesting to find out the exact overall % you could look at the number of windows systems sold and the number that firefox etc has been downloaded.

Nope. Two of the sites I'm talking about are NOT in the WebDev field. The webdev site is actually lower for IE than the other two.

And I'm not the only one who has noted this. See this thread, iany's comment.

http://www.webproworld.com/viewtopic...=323516#323516

If your stats are so skewed toward IE use, I'd be looking at how your site performs in the other browsers. It could be that the folks using other browsers are leaving within the first few seconds since they aren't getting a usable experience. That right there would bump your stats toward IE.

I suspect the truth is somewhere between your estimates bj and thecat. I get between 70 and 80% IE use on sites that aren't design or web related. Much less for Illustrated History where I get nearly as much traffic from Safari users as Internet Explorer users. This would tend to support thecat's assertion that users tend to use the default browser. In this case (I suspect) graphic design students using Apple Macs.

Back to the original point though, inertia, what's wrong with using two browsers? If it's part of your job to know the page rank of a given site surely you can copy the URL into a new browser page in Firefox to check it? And if you're not developing for the web what's stopping you from using Firefox anyway? Almost every reply you've had here recommends it.

Cheers,
Simon

Well ive downloaded firefox and wouldn’t you know it! Page rank has started working on both browsers!

One thing im still a little unsure about tho. If a site displays correctly on firefox will it definitely display ok on IE? And vice-versa???

IE is the broken browser. Sites USUALLY display fine in Firefox (or Opera or Safari) if they were coded properly. IE is a crapshoot unless you know what you're doing, and hack to make it work.

It's either that or use old code, which carries problems of its own (lack of accessibility, can't be "seen" on other media such as cellphones and palm pilots, etc.)

So no, there is no gurantee that a site will look good in all browsers unless it was coded to do so. And anyone who codes so sites look good in IE is usually guaranteeing that the site will be broken in the GOOD browsers. It's actually better to develop for the good browsers and then fix for IE by feeding it "IE only" styles.

I prefer IE and so do 80% of the visitors to my website. Many people have difficulty getting tables to align correctly in firefox. I have had a few problems with it myself and so I always use IE now.

Um, if you code for IE you are guaranteeing the other browsers won't work. It's easy enough to fix for IE once you've got it working in the others. Just use Conditional Comments to feed IE its own styles.
