Like other things at Google, artificial intelligence and computer automation perform some of the grunt work.

This article is interesting. My own impression, Google is more dynamic than I thought. They use free software like Linux, and even modify the Linux kernel. They make their own programming language and even thought of making their own data chip. Their engineers study chips in detail, that means that the know everything about clock cycles, risc processors, registers, input / output, etc.

That's an incredible peep into the intra-workings of the GOOG.

"The company won't discuss these estimates; it considers such numbers to be a competitive advantage. In fact, one of the things Google likes about open source software is that it facilitates secrecy. "If we had to go and buy software licenses, or code licenses, based on seats, people would absolutely know what the Google infrastructure looks like," DiBona says. "The use of open source software, that's one more way we can control our destiny."
