Default Don't use "&id="

Quote:
Don't use "&id=" as a parameter in your URLs, as we don't include these pages in our index.
As you can see here http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=site:http://autotrader.co.uk&num=100&hl=en&lr=&cr=countryUK|co untryGB&rls=GGLG,GGLG:2006-09,GGLG:en&start=700&sa=N

This is clearly not the case..

Is Don't use "&id=" really just &id= and not ?id= or ?something=

I think Google would be doing just half a job if it negglects ?id= ... Half the web is madeup of dynamic pages!

Why would they quote the above?

Just because Google is ranking you today doesnt mean they will rank you tomorrow. I would take their advice and avoid using "id" in my URL strings. "id" is commonly used when placing session ids in the URL string.

id? or shop_id? whats the difference

A dynamic site has to use this in the URL. If google choses not to index anything? or id? the results of a great deal of the web will be ignored including this forum!

The whole thing seems very bizzar

Like you have seen they do index websites with that parameter. I would just use something else if you control over it.

It makes no sense at all for Google to index 10000 identical pages simply because you feel that you have to use the ID= in your URL, which you do not have to do.

You can use it or not, but if Google chooses not to index or rank the pages then you have been advised against it.

Was expecting a more comments on this one!

There is still a great deal to question re this one.

I am presuming that "&id=" meens exactily that and not "?id="

If Google has a problem with "id" this seems also very strange.

Or is it any use of the "&" as in http://www.webproworld.com/posting.php?mode=reply&t=62302

"?mode=" is not different to using "?id="

nor is "&t=" any different to "&id="

Only Google in its infinite wisdom knows I guess.....
