Reporting Spam to Google

Lots of competitors for a set of keywords I'm aiming for are using pretty obvious spam, such as invisible text. I was wondering whether reporting them to google would actually get their sites reviewed (and banned :-))?

generally, no. Google uses spam reports to get a better understanding of spam techniques, so they can better develop algorithmic solutions. Individual sites are rarely acted on if spam reports are made, but theoretically spam sites will be got eventually once the algorithm is better at detecting them.
