Default GoogleMail.com to be launched?

An interesting story broke yesterday regarding a new Google mail service. Sounds like Google wants to become a portal to me. Here is a link to the Reuters story:

If they try to do it the way Yahoo did, I think it will be a mistake - and I'd be surprised to see them make that mistake.

If the plan is to continue to offer "parallel" services alongside Google Search, they'll be okay. What they don't want to do, in my opinion, is anything to compromise the simplicity and speed of the search engine - that will kill what made them big in the first place.

But, it will be spam that is relative to your other spam!!! That's the neat part. Google spam will analyze your other spam, and send you more of the same. They will probably name it SpamSense, SpamWords, or something like that. ;0)

You could be a publisher of SpamWords in your email too. I can see it now, sending love letters to your sweethearts all day long. And off to the side is a skyscraper ad for FTD Florists, Whitman's Chocolates, Gordon Jewelers, and one non-profit one for a Justice of the Peace in Reno.

Default Google Developing E-Mail Ad Service

This is interesting...

"SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc., which dominates the market for Web search, is developing a service that could dramatically extend the reach of its lucrative keyword-based advertising by linking such ads to e-mail, people familiar with the matter said on Friday..."

"By moving into e-mail -- the Web's most-used program -- Google would open up a huge new market for its lucrative "sponsored links" advertising business that delivers ads tied to keywords in Web searches or on content pages, analysts said..."

There is a growing schism between what Google says and what Google does:

From its inception, Google has focused on providing the best user experience possible. While many companies claim to put their customers first, few are able to resist the temptation to make small sacrifices to increase shareholder value. Google has steadfastly refused to make any change that does not offer a benefit to the users who come to the site:

The interface is clear and simple.
Pages load instantly.
Placement in search results is never sold to anyone.
Advertising on the site must offer relevant content and not be a distraction.
By always placing the interests of the user first, Google has built the most loyal audience on the web. And that growth has come not through TV ad campaigns, but through word of mouth from one satisfied user to another.

2) It's best to do one thing really, really well.

Google does search. Google does not do horoscopes, financial advice or chat. With 50 Ph.D.s and the largest research group in the world focused exclusively on solving search problems, Google knows what it does well and how it could be done better. Through continued iteration on difficult problems, Google has been able to solve complex issues that stymie others and provide continuous improvements to a service already considered the best on the web. Innovations like Google's spell checker and the Google Toolbar, which enables users to search using Google from any website, make finding information a fast and seamless experience for millions of users. Google's entire staff is dedicated to creating the perfect search engine and work tirelessly toward that goal.
Thier current actions seem to differ from their corporate philosoply as stated above.

BTW do you wonder about the veracity of stories like this when the reporter calls Frooge a comparative shopping service? Wonder if the reporter ever bothered to log onto Froogle?
