Have just launched a new site www.motherofthebrideoutfits.co.uk and started work on promotion and submission to SE's.
I have done a search for the website using its address in all the SE's and to date MSN is the only one to recognise it, which by the way was after only one day of launch. Perhaps this is because I wrote an article in an MSN newsgroup and made mention of it. Anyway, I have submitted the site to Yahoo, Google etc and posted blogs in both of their domains but they don't find the site yet. I don't expect to get a top listing in any short space of time but how long should it take in general to get the site actually found when doing a search for it?

Get some links (like your post above did) and they'll find you. It may take a week, may take a month, may take a matter of hours, but the more links you get (preferably from sites about your same topic) the quicker you'll be included.
Brian.

Thanks Brian,
I'm aware of the need for links which is exactly why I've posted here as you suggest, as well as a dozen other newsgroups etc in the last couple of days. I also use the remarkable free tool of Web CEO that I got from one of your sponsors or something and I've optimised the site using that. I think this tool is fantastic for a beginner, so easy to use and bloody good value for money. One of the things it makes mention of in its site optimisation is that the keywords aren't mentioned in the URl address. Now, my main keyphrase is "mother of the bride outfits" so does the url of www.motherofthebrideoutfits.co.uk get split up and recognised for its component parts? Oops there I go again........another link. Thanks

Directories would be a great start for you as well. They get crawled reasonably often. here is an excellent place to start. That list is almost too big, but start at the beginning and make yourself a spreadsheet to track directory name, submission date, requirements, and when your listing appears. That thread has seen some miles, but I still refer to it quite often as it is very comprehensive. I wouldn't worry too much about the keywords in the url. They do get recognized as individual words, but there is a lot more to SEO (such as links and page content) to worry about than creating mother-of-the-bride-outfits.html somewhere on your site. Off-page factors are much more important to Google and MSN than having the keywords in your URL. Brian.

Lynn,
1. Music - aaaaaagggghhhh!!!!! 2. You've elected to remain anonymous in the whois database. Not good. Its the sort of thing spammers do. 3. Links - neither Google or Yahoo think you have any. 4. Patience - You only registered the domain two weeks ago. Best of luck though. You can probably tell by the name, I'm Geordie like. David Burdon

Many Thanks David,
Actually I have quite a few links posted out there right now, just none of them have been picked up yet. I've spent most of the last couple of days submitting to forums etc and building web presence in articles associated to the fashion industry. Oh, a word here.... Although I'm called Lynn, I ain't no woman. (it was my mother's maiden name and my sister is always late for everything if you get the meaning, ie she was born after me). The business belongs to my wife (June) and I do all her web stuff, office work etc. I do know a bit about website stuff though as I panicked a couple of years ago when a new Outlet Centre was built within two miles. It was then I decided we should have a website so without knowing my URL's from my SEO's I got on with it and just did it. Since then the site www.thebridesmother.co.uk is position ten rank or better worldwide on Google and most other SE's for the major phrases, mother of the bride outfits, mother of the groom outfits etc. It took a year to get the rankings and a hell of a lot of messing around to get the site optimised (at least for the keywords) and to be honest this particular forum has been invaluable. The turnover has gone up by 35% in the last year and I regularly collect ladies flying in to Newcastle Airport from Ireland, Bristol, Stanstead etc as well as posting out loads of outfits ordered by phone and email. The last thing posted out was a special hat to the Avenue Grace Kelly in Monaco. This time of the year is pretty slack for mother of the bride outfits (oops there I go again)so I decided to make up a new site and optimise it for those who don't have broadband as the original site even has video clips on it. I know the music is a bit of a problem but what I wanted was a site with something extra. Most other competing sites are pretty bland, few pictures etc and I wanted something to catch a visitor off guard and remember us by. It seems to work well. I get loads of really positive comments from ladies who have been to the original site. I may drop the music on the second site though as I want to offer the dial up modem visitors something to load faster. Anyway, thanks for your comments and get yourself back home to support the Magpies. They need all the help they can get right now.

Checked today and I find that Google has me listed now.
Page 20 ranking for mother of the bride outfits but we all have to start somewhere. Will keep a keen eye and see if I can nudge up a little as time goes by.

Nice outfits! I notice that on www.thebridesmother.co.uk section you have a click through on the images to an expanded image page. You could add some text to those pages, and also provide some text links back to the parent and or other sections which would help things along. |

Put your link in your signature with the keywords you want to focus on as the anchor text e.g.
Mother of the Bride Outfits, Mother of the Groom Outfits and Fashions for Special Occasions That heading text is a bit long for my linking myself, by the way. You may want three separate headers for three separate pages (i.e. Mother of the Bride Outfits on one page, Mother of the Groom Outfits on a second and Fashions for Special occasions on a third.) Other than the suggestions already made, the only other one I can come up with is to write a decent article and submit it to the article websites. That's a HUGE traffic generator in a short time period, and it also generates quite a few permanent inbound links that SEs love so very very much. And this has nothing to do with search engine promotion, but you have a broken image link to ilovedress.com on the opening page.

Thanks guys.
Getting there right now. Have changed signature to help recognition. I know about the broken link at the bottom but have been too busy just looking for appropriate sites to link to and other forums to post in. As you can see, I do have a blog, actually I have a few but the fashion digest one is my main area of input. Not enough time in the day to post to all of them, do the accounts, run customers backwards and forwards to the airport, collect stock etc, hoover and make the meals etc. Bloody hectic life this. Anyway, thanks again guys. I'll keep on listening and learning. Oh, Google is ranking some of my kewords as low as page 5 on the new site so I guess I did something right. Now to bed. Completely knackered.

forum or boards are great for getting noticed, but i just noticed this thread has a PR of 1 ..wouldnt that mean we are linked from a PR1? dont get me wrong this is probably one of the best SEO boards on the net, i have learnt tons of info and understanding from here and WPW newsletters, but my inner SEO wonders about linkbacks at PR1 or below my domains norm ...just a thought :-/
anyways here's a link for Lynn.. http://www.google.co.uk/addurl/?continue=/addurl also Lynne if you have a domain you can FTP your blogger.com blog from your dashboard to it and drop the blogspot. just remember spiders and bots love fresh content, but dont forget to give your visitors a lot of attention too. first impressions count. |
