Google Directory Updated
The Google Directory has been updated. My site fell a little, but the number of back links increased. Not logical.

I almost hate to speculate on this, this early Jacob, but it almost seems to me that GOOGLE has "transferred" some of the "Relevancy Factor" from IBLs to OBLs, both in Quantity and Quality in this update.
My opinion is that they have been looking for relevant "exocentric" Sites for the last 2 updates. They did "squash" a number of "self catering" Directories, while elevating the prominence of others in the last update, didn't they.

Do not know
Ken, if you can figure out what Google is up to, you are a smarter man than me.

Jacob,
It also seems like GOOGLE has reinforced, or applied a "long term" link aging factor that may even evaluate the number of times selected, spiced with how long the visitors stay, sharpening their IBL "Relevancy" Tool.
That should have been expected though.
With GOOGLE, IBL's have been being gained and lost simultaneously, for a while. IMO - They continue to "tweak" that alg aspect with "Jagger". IMO - They applied their "patent" a little deeper here, thus the large % losses in IBL's for many.

Most of my links are more than a year old.

Jacob,
Do you have a good feel for how often they are selected and how long visitors stay, from your stats?
Granted most stats don't convey how long a visitor stays on an individuallly identifiable page, like GOOGLE may or may not be able to deduce and record... but is overall time increasing in the longer period denominations as expressed in your stats?

Time
People stay on my site a long time; I have 1,400 words of text per page.

Generally, "Spam Marketing" creates:
fewer selections of OBLs on any Site using any technology, even including CSS Spam. They really don't give a rat's a__ about what technology is being used, this way! - They "get it" and filter it out through this "Relevancy Factor" being applied to IBLs and OBLs now...
Lower visitor viewing durations
Why not toss those over to the OBLs too? These alg changes aren't so sudden most of the time any more. They come in stages... I haven't seen anything this time that wasn't at least hinted at in the last update.
IMO - Every reasonable guess and logical thought points that direction.
