Default observation

Well, this morning I tried to check out if GG blog search has already spidered our blog so I launched a search and here we go!! We are at the upper section 'related blogs! wow! Then I sent the link to my colleague and he asked 'what's for?' He couldn't find our blog where I found it...

Do you see what I mean? Google returned me personalized results according to my habits. Sure I launched search for the keywords we target and perhaps, I don't remember it for sure, after that I went to our site from a link at SERPS. What I'm saying is - Google shows me what I want to see:-) My colleague didn't launched the searches I did and that's why he couldn't see the same SERPs I saw.

Has anybody spotted the same issue yet?

Interesting observation which would have some dramatic implications for SEO if personalised searches became mainstream.

By that I mean: I keep a regular watch on my pages to ensure they are where they should be, every so often I will click on my page to access it to be sure it all works etc.. Also a search for a page is often faster than navigating to it or typing the url. Perhaps GG will record my preference and ensure that I always see my favourite pages at the top even if they start slipping for the rest of the world. I would then end up in blissfull ignorance of my declining SERPS.

In fact I use other tools such as http://www.digitalpoint.com/tools/keywords/ to see where my pages are, but I can see this catching out others who are tracking their page position.

Anytime I get a top ranking or ranking that is important to me, I ask others across the country (and in different countries when possible) to check them when they have a chance to give me some feedback. It is amazing how much they vary and speculating on the reasons why they are different is just as amazing to figure out. This differential is nothing new. They have varied from different geo-specific regions for a couple of years now as you know. Now seeing different results from your next door neighbor, then that is personalization.

Default Profiling.

Google probably knows more about you then yourself.

Just think of all the google services you use. Like Gmail, Desktop search, Toolbar, GTalk and many more to come in near future.

They know your habits, preferences, interestes, everything.

Now they just need to show you relevant ads to make you click and buy the products.

Default For users, not for SEO

Well, I believe all of you read about Google team works for people who use GG for millions purposes, for USERS but not for SEO guys. Perhaps it sounds sad but it's inevitable, GG will not do the best to make us (SEO guys) happy. It's obvious - personalization is another step to meet any search engine user habits, requirements. The solution I see for SEO people is to remember about GG main goal, their mission to organize all information and...etc, this mission do not include any special item like
- to make SEO guys work easier or something:-)

Just do not use personalization when you do SEO for your site and use proxy to go online. I believe this situation I faced with isn't the last one it'll be much more of them:-) but I don't think it's a tragedy or something. As long as I target my site for the right keywords - Google won't drop my site (I hope so:-) )

What about possible different datacentres?

I often get results at home whic are different to work.

I also check my logs and find people searching for terms and the results are on the front page. When I check they are no where near!

Maybe they are just testing. If the visitors are happy with perosonalized search. Then get ready for the next serps - shake em up coktail.
