Default Backlinks SERPs & Google Cache

Another one for the experts:

I would like opinions on when exactly new backlinks are recognised and effect ranking in the serps?

Is it only following the next caching of the page in question, or are newly discovered backlinks found by googlebot on re-caching other sites added to the score that Google holds from the last stored cache?

My experience is that new links sometimes seem to effect serps positioning even before the page is cached although common sense says this is unlikely.

This effect may simply be other sites being re-cached and moving down or up the serps.

As far as Google, new links are doing less and less as time goes on....

Google is taking "link age" as a very important factor in the weight process.... The older the link, the better it will perform for serps....

The stronger the site giving the link, the less time it will take but time is still very important.....

A link that is here today and gone tomorrow does very little so google wants to measure this on a consistant basis....
