Using quotes in search

Does anybody know why using quotes in a search produces different results?
My site suffered badly as a result of the recent updates.
However I have found that for some search terms using quotes I am listed fourth whereas when not using quotes I am not in the first 25 pages.
Unfortunately not many people use quotes in searches

Quotes only brings up results where those words are together on your page. The other way it would pull up as long as both of words are on the page not necissaariy together

On most search engines, I believe using quotation marks around a search phrase is effectively saying. "all these words in this order", whereas the default without quotation marks is ANY of these words in ANY order...
