Default How many links does it take?

How many links does it take to get a site to have a decent popularity? I keep adding slowly, but my popularity of the sites is poor. (I know I am in a very competitive area.) Is there a rule of thumb? A length of time required for a site to mature? Another secret?

thanks

Depends on the keyword(s) you are targeting.

If it a really obscure term, then one link is enough. If you want to rank higher than Apple for computers, then a few million will not be enough.

Default What do you mean by...

What do you mean by popularity? If you mean that green stuff in IE, then forget about it. That's sort of like driving by the tachometer without knowing what gear you're in. It's not all that useful. If you're working for rankings, then it's most certainly as cbp stated.

Too many people are obsessed with the green bar and not with ranking well. New sites will naturally take a while to rank, so it isn't something you can do in a few days, weeks, or even months. Many sites are reporting their first top 10's after a year or more, while some are in the 6 month range.

Just keep building links and eventually you'll be doing fine. If you need the traffic right now, then you better set aside some money for PPC.

I was reading the Google Patent, and it says it right there somewhere around [0103]. Google says building good, quality backlinks or 1-way authoritive links SLOWLY is better than getting backlinks fast and all at once. They could possibly record that as spam also.

So, get links slowly, and keep building as your site progresses. Always keep getting links so your site always has fresh content. Content is key.
