Default Misleading SEO Tool

I thought this was a great keyword selector tool for Google: http://www.tele-pro.co.uk/scripts/google/popularity.asp.

It is labeled "Google Keyword Popularity".

After writing to the webmaster of that site three times asking if they numbers returned were searches per month, searches year-to-date, or what, I finally received a reply.

The numbers returned are simply the number of search results Google comes up with for a keyword, which you can get simply by Googling something and looking.

It is not a good indicator of keyword popularity, as labeled. Just because the term "water" returns 180 million results does not mean many people search for "water" without some kind of qualifier.

That leaves the Overture tool and one at GlobalPromoter.com that I am aware of. If any of you know of any better keyword selector tools please let us know.

Default Wordtracker.

Personally, I use wordtracker. It doesn't use Google data, but then nothing really does other than the AdWords stuff, and it gives you estimated clicks based on average CTR, not number of searches.

Wordtracker seems to be the tool of choice for many SEM / SEO companies. Price is reasonable, and the data gives a decent indicator as to which of 2 keywords / phrases would be better. I don't think we're ever going to get actual number of searches across the web since none of the engines will even admit how many searches they truly do, so I quit looking for that golden egg.

Yes, I've been thinking about ponying up for Word Tracker. Thanks for the recommendation.

I still swear by Web CEO 5 as it does more or less the same as Word Tracker, just through one of it's toolsets (keyword analysis tool). So much so that sometimes I actually wish it's out of date (when ranking drops).
