1. I follow exactly the directions from google sitemap documentation. I have already setup the Config.xml for directory paths.
2. I Copyed the following files to your webserver: sitemap_gen.py config.xml 3. I'm trying to execute the script: I try to do this setting up a cron job in my Cpanel Cron Jobs. I did that I get error. On my cron output I get: Reading configuration file: /home/directo1/public_html/config.xml Walking DIRECTORY "/home/directo1/public_html/" Traceback (most recent call last): File "/home/directo1/public_html/sitemap_gen.py", line 1201, in ? sitemap.Generate() File "/home/directo1/public_html/sitemap_gen.py", line 832, in Generate input.ProduceURLs(self.ConsumeURL) File "/home/directo1/public_html/sitemap_gen.py", line 585, in ProduceURLs os.path.walk(self._path, PerFile, None) File "/usr/lib/python2.3/posixpath.py", line 290, in walk walk(name, func, arg) File "/usr/lib/python2.3/posixpath.py", line 290, in walk walk(name, func, arg) File "/usr/lib/python2.3/posixpath.py", line 290, in walk walk(name, func, arg) File "/usr/lib/python2.3/posixpath.py", line 282, in walk func(arg, top, names) File "/home/directo1/public_html/sitemap_gen.py", line 564, in PerFile path = os.path.join(dirpath, name) File "/usr/lib/python2.3/posixpath.py", line 65, in join path += '/' + b UnicodeDecodeError: 'ascii' codec can't decode byte 0x97 in position 87: ordinal not in range(128) I tryed all sugestions: encoding="utf-8" encoding="ascii" encoding="iso-8859-1" And the same. First, welcome to the forum.
I don't understand what you are asking. Are you asking how to make a site map for google? Or are you asking how to code something? A little more explanation and i'm sure someone can answer your question. |

This is a bigger "bucket of worms" than many expected. There is more behind the scenes. reference:

Can you run it from the command line? That would at least tell us if it is indeed workable.
Did you transfer in ASCII or Binary mode? This seems like it may be an error caused by Binary FTP to a *NIX server. Brian.

has anyone used the link from Don? I am concerned about the mixed reviews about this new google sitemap deal....which way to go..my sites arent that large but could always use g's help in rankings..

frontman,
I use it and Googlebot loves it..just try and thank me later (-|-) To get higher ranking you're looking the wrong way.. (have to say it ..) If not all your pages are indexed then it can help a lot.. People who have ranked better because of this sitemap probaly had a link structure that wasn't that good. So if thats you're thing, do it as fast as you can |-) |

Don - Thanks for the info...I am a novice so sorry for asking this...where would one place the code in the site? on seperate page or within the site map already made?
|
|

you don't have to say sorry, I've been there to.Just make a file and name it sitemap.xml
Is that all?,yes it is. You must go into your Google account and add a sitemap. I don't know for sure if you are aware of this.. Succes. |
