I have never seen an image link (like a banner ad) show up in Google backlinks, even when the banner is hard coded with no ad server. Has anyone seen Google list a banner ad in backlinks?

I must confirm this - so far I have never seen one image link like that, listed in backlinks. I wonder if we should change this on our sites, so only text links are provided...

yes I was linking friends of mine before even with Image maps ... and the links are live showed with link:www

The only exception that I can think of is from the site itself, when images are used for the navigation. I have certainly seen that. I agree that it seems text links are, perhaps, listed more often.

IMHO this is why text links are much better, especially when they are keyword/content relevant!

Also, keep in mind that Google has differents robots.

I have noticed that once thier imagebot crawled my site and began listing pics in the GoogleImages:

My SERP increased
My PR increased
My visitors increased

Google loves Google. Also, Google loves secrecy.

Just because G doesn't show a linkback listing, doesn't mean you're not getting the benefit having the banner or link. I think if it's in the Images side of Google, you'll still get residual benefits though there's no way to confirm or get Google to deny ....

Banner liks are also counted, if you want to see example see www.go4customer.com, the links from www.rightmarkets.com are only banners links.
