Hi all, (New here)
I have been online for 12 years now, and have has an online business for over 8 years now. I do not like what google has done! In a real bad way. Google must have not know what they were doing when they did this update. For one reason now you could register a domiain, of a few and upload alot of junk, spam pages, link them all to a compedator and they will then loose their ranks in google. Why would google do this?? I have no clue. They say that if this was to go on.. Then I guess you the linked to site would have no ask nice for that person to remove the links. This is what went wrong with my business. Someone (No names) that still makes gates linked my site, and a few other big ones over 4 months ago. I was not worried at first, and then google did this update, then out of business now !!! Was making $400,000 a year. SO NOW ANYONE CAN KILL ANYONE ELSES BUSINESS THANX TO GOOGLE!! Start using MSN, or Yahoo. (Yahoo is drop google soon and use Ink.) Thanx all. PS: Dont think this is true. Reg a new domain that is not in the index, and link a bunch of pages to another page.. See what happens |

Now I have to go and explain I really hate having to do this.
Here it goes. Google on there web site says that links coming into your web site can never hurt you but links going out can. Googleguy also said this last month. Now I was ranked #1 but dropped to I think #11 for the word custom web design The reason for the drop was that I had about 400 links ( and I get get the exact number for you if I need to ) coming from one site. ( A link on every page.) Google dropped all the links that they first counted and then only counted it as one link. So because I lost credit for what I once had I could say it hurt me but the truth is I lost credit for some of the links that I had first been credited for but it did not hurt me and I'm still ranked #11. |

It is very doubtful that a link from a spammy site can hurt you - if it did I would be adding my competitors to a few of them :-) CBP |

Let me rephrase.
I am not saying that links are bad. I am saying they may have an effect. In your case Janeth it dropped you just ten places on a 3-word term. That effect is more pronounced on 2-word terms, so much more so that it has the effect of taking you right out of the picture like those "gift basket" people. I did not mention anything about it affecting PR. I do not know if it does or not. It has not affected the "fish oil" guy or, as far as I know, the "gift basket" people. Magnum is the one stating that it did. He made the reference to that it was due to spammy pages. But he refuses to divulge where those pages are or who they belong to. My email correspondance is dealing with this issue and if it exists, in addition to the 300+ links...in some cases they overlap. So Magnum is not the first person that I have actually heard about the spammy pages from. I am just exploring the possibility that it might exist, and trying to prove or disprove the notion. It would be nice if this guy would give us more particulars on it. There are some statements he made that sound a little far fetched...such as the $400,000 a year and how Google in one fell swoop put him out of business. I do not swallow that part of it. If I had that happen to me and I came into this Forum to vent some hostility...I will tell you right now that I would not be holding back about who these scum sucking spammers were. To come in and just make a bunch of accusations against Google and in the same breath hold back the perinent information is ludicrous. It sounds all too fishy. But even so...there is the fact that this type of thing is being talked about outside of this Forum. That is what piqued my curiosity about this whole thing. So I invite Magnum to elaborate a little more on the subject and enlighten us further. |

Hi Guys
Sorry to put my bit into this intelligent discussion. But my take is that after the new update with google I found out that my site (in profile) was boosted in a lot of search terms even though I usually do very well (normally have between 9,000 and 14,000 individual search terms used to find me site every month and it has about 1600 page views a day). I found that a few of my scottish web desigers/operators couterparts had a lot of their pages dropped mainly from their link sections. A lot I must admit link to sites for the sake of it!. they all have links to my site as I do with their sites but I have their links in relevant pages. I have many sites that I link to and from my main site, (they all must link back), mainly with the scottish tourism / accommodation section. I do link to big sites and small independant sites but every link I add to my site is added into a relevant page. There is one site ( a small B&B site in Ullapool, Scottish West Coast) who links to every site going, world acommodation, that is prepared to link to his site. I dont do this any more. I feel his site would be dropped on this new google update but it hasn't and I'm still linked to and from his site but my links to his site are all in pages relevant to his area i.e. Wester Ross. I think links from sites to your own site will not affect you but if you link to said site from any page without making it relevant I think you would be bured quite heavily. As I said for me the update has been great but for how long. Sorry to but in but I'm a neewbie and a taxi driver but I get by. Oh and by the way Hope you all have a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year! |

Cabbie -- Welcome to WPW Laddie !!!
What you stated above makes a lot of sense to me. It is my thinking as well. As long as your pages with their links on them are relevant -- then there should not be any harm. There are sites out there that do quite well with this type of approach. They do not sell anything per say, but are top ranked and pull in tons of traffic...and refer lots of traffic too. The sites I am referring to are in the Health area and are www.selfgrowth.com and www.naturalhealthweb.com. By all rights, they are giant linking directories. But they have a twist to them, in that there are a lot of focused relative articles to go with the links. The articles are submitted by some of the actual link partners themselves. They in turn, compile and edit these articles -- and then resell e-book versions of them. Everybody wins !!! These sites have a very strange side effect too. It is not unusual to see them show up in the SERPS for some of your keywords/phrases (or anybody else's set of phrases for that matter) sitting right there on page one or page two...although they have nothing to do with the actual search -- they just have one link on one page of theirs with the search phrase in it. |
