Default Google and Yahoo Directory Listing

I have read in a few posts that Directory listings are considered better relevant IBL's. I agree DMOZ is and other human edited static links but what about Yahoo? All the listings are redirects. It was my understanding 302 redirects are not counted by Google. I am not sure if the links are 301 or 302. Is their an easy way to tell?

Secondly, I have read some say Google gives more credit if a site is listed in a human edited Directory or reviewed by human editors. Such as being listed with Adwords(reviewed), or Yahoo(overture, directory). How would Google know this if the links are redirects?

Default Yahoo IBL's

It's wierd, some links from the Yahoo! directory do get listed in Google's IBL data.

Check http://www.somd.com&hl=en&lr=&start=10&sa=N]this link[/url] they get listed from Yahoo! and Google reads them. It's http://www.somd.com

However I know of many sites listed by Yahoo! that are not caught by Google. Aso for the credit Google gives it, I couldn't say. They have like 500+ other links, and are excellent in G's SERP's. I'm just waiting for Google to pick up more links forom the Yahoo! directory before I list. ;)

Hope this helps.

I see their Yahoo link is listed is the backlinks. I guess the redirect is a 301? Otherwise how would Google give give proper domain credit.

I have found many directories which use redirects. Yahoo for 299.00/yr is steep but if it is actually going to count as a good IBL it's worth it.

There have been a lot of posts around for a few months now claiming that Yahoo directory links no longer count as they as some sort of redirect.

I can still see Yahoo directory listing as backlinks when checking on Google, Yahoo and MSN --> they must count. The funny thing about these claims made by posters in different forums, is that when its pointed out that they do show up as backlinks, they never come back to defend their position....

I have seen that written too - but I have absolutly no idea if its the case or not or how anyone knows it to be the case or not.

It could make sense to give site more credit, but IMHO, I am not convinved they do - as possibly most of the best sites probably never get even get submitted to Directories. eg can you image, for example, Nike, Google, NY Times, Disney etc bothering to submit their site(s) to directories. Some human edited directories (eg DMOZ) will add them anyway, but most won't.

cbp - Good points.

Is their a way to check the status of the redirect, maybe in the response headers sent to the browser?

I am curious to see if it is a 301 or 302? I know Google was at one point having a problem with 302's.

I found this link in the backlinks in MSN, the first link was from an advertisement.

http://www.holidays.net/christmas/

it has since been replaced with 302 redirect from a Directory

http://www.categoo.org/?url=http://w...o&category=Toy

As soon as this backlink was updated to redirect URL my listing fell from #4 to #9 on MSN. I am assuming my listing lost the power of the better link and the categoo link is duplicate content now.

So I take it either Google handles Y! listing special or they have fixed the 302 problem. About a month ago we had some content hijacked by a 302 which Google did index under the hijacker domain. Maybe they treat redirects from Yahoo differently?

I have to agree with cbp here. It would make sense for a site to be given credit, but I don't believe it is. If Google did find a way to handle Yahoo! listings, assuming they had a problem in the first place, I can't see Google giving Yahoo! the upper hand of webmasters finding out that paying $299 a year for an IBL with give them a better shot in the SERP's. That would only cause Yahoo!'s directory to become "bigger" than Google's.

IMO That would go against everything Google says they are. A fully automated search engine. To single out certain things from certain sites.
