Default what about https

Hi there,

How dos google handle https websites. Dos google rank https websites lower then the http sites?

I changed a website to https to make it secure and the reult was that the website lost its rankings on my targeted keywords. It ranked verywel but now it dropped from the google listings.

Also the pagerank bar went grey and dropped to not ranked.
whats happening?

Anny ideas?

I read the GoogleGuy suggested GoogleBot can crawl SSL urls. By changing the url these are now considered new pages and therefore the reason for your greyed out toolbar. Have the SSL urls been indexed?

PS How's it going in NL? I used to live in Soesterberg about 10 years ago. About an hour from Amsterdam

Hi DMC_34,

The urls are indexed but even then the pr remains grey as in not ranked alt all... not even 0.

I noted that the backward links are still refering to the http url so that has to be changed ofcourse.

Its great in NL! ;)
Nice sun shine today...
I live in Arnhem also about 1 hour (fast driving) from Amsterdam.

Default You changed the whole site?

Let me get this straight... you changed the whole site to SSL?

This is not only unnecessary (SSL is meant to protect personal information, not an entire website), but it also will cause more overhead on your server and on your visitor's computers. Older computers don't like the overhead of SSL any more than they have to.

If you're running e-commerce, typically only the checkout portion is done via SSL. The rest remains HTTP as this isn't personally identifiable.

As for your PR being greyed, that is simply because there hasn't been a public update (Googlebar) since January. Any pages not spidered by then show the greyed out bar. Also, I don't think Google shows PR on SSL pages. This at one point was done to prevent PR from influencing buying decisions.

Brian.

Go to any major bank's website. If the entire site is SSL there's no PR bar and the page info button is dimmed.

If the site is http, click the login link. That page is sure to be SSL. Again, no PR bar, no Info button.

I suspect that it is more a function of the browser and the standards around SSL security. Either way, it's not a pretty toolbar.

I would agree with brian.mark in that SSL should be used only at the point where security is critical.
