Default page rank vs appliedsemantics

http://news.com.com/2100-1024_3-986204.html

Google co-founder Larry Page invented a methodology called PageRank, which was patented to the board of trustees of the Leland Stanford Junior University on September 2001.

Google owns appliedsemantics but how will this effect their ipo?

Google purchased Applied Semantics for a reason ... the only reason I can think of is to use their technology in their search results. There has been a lot of debate if Florida was somehow associated with this (I not so sure). If the purpose of the purchase was to improve the search technology, it should improve the price for the IPO (assuming the technology actually improves search relevancy ...)

I not sure what you are trying to make in the link between PageRank and Applied Semantics - they are different methods of analysis that go into the mix to give a ranking to a page.

BTW - the news item you linked to is almost 12 months old.

I know its old it just says who owns pagerank. It doesnt say google owns that patent. Which is a big part of their search algo.

I'm wondering seeing as page rank has been around for a while and a lot of people have figured how to manipulate their rankings wouldnt that make it an obselete system?

Wouldnt using circa technology( a self learning on they fly system) take time to adjust(results being more relevant than just authority and directory sites remaining from florida) and be harder to influence the serps especially with page rank being removed from the algo?

Could be that Google have actually started doing just that? i.e., 'learning on the fly'?

This is well worth a careful read.

If this guy is wrong and Google are not doing it now, given the Applied Semantics purchase, there is good reason to believe that they will be doing it in the future.
