Default DMOZ

I'm trying to get various sites of mine listed in DMOZ, at first I used 'AddWeb' (a submission tool) but this kept getting error 500. So I tried manually submitting the URL etc. After 3 months, non of these submitted sites have appear in the directory. I have a sneakie feeling that one of my competitors in my local area is an editor for the particluar category in the directory (have no proof).

Has anyone else had problems getting listed in DMOZ and what's the best way to submit sites to the directory?

Sites can take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 years to get listed (<6months is most common). You can check the status of your submission at:
http://www.resource-zone.com/ (please read the posting guidelines first)

If you suspect editor abuse, go to:
http://inelegant.org/report-abuse/en/

Manny - DMOZ is the Open DIrectory Project www.dmoz.org - apparently its important to get your site listed there.

Just to add to cbp comments -- a lengthy time between submission and inclusion does not always infer a competitor is keeping you out, so be very careful what you say and how you say it.

If you inquire at resource zone -- be polite, as everyone there is a volunteer and really don't need to do anything for you and further -- probably don't appreciate unfounded accusations either.

Hi MannyR - DMOZ is an open directory and part of Google. By clicking on the 'directory' part of the main site, you can then search out particular categories or locations. The service is run by volentiers who edit and maintaine it.

To cbp & Fathom - I apologise for making unfounded accusations, I never realised that submissions to the DMOZ service could take so long. I won't mention such a thing again.

DMOZ is not part of Google. Google is one of 1000's of users of the DMOZ database.

http://www.dmoz.org/ is a directory which only lists web sites if they consider you unique.

Please keep this in mind.

1- DMOZ does not accept every site.

2- Since you submitted several sites, you may have given them a reason to not include you. This holds true if the sites you submitted were similar.

3- As stated before, it can take two weeks or two years.

4- All the editors at DMOZ are volunteers, if you happen to be in a category that doesn't have an editor, be prepared to wait a long time. If your web site is in a competitive category, you should also expect to wait a long time due to its backlog.

5- DMOZ is very important to all of us. If your site gets approved at DMOZ, its almost like a green pass for better positioning at Google.

6- Until you get an answer, please make sure you read all the requirements they have and cross reference them with your sites.

7- Be careful, don't point fingers at this point.

I have to take issue with this statement: Google does draw on DMOZ for its own Google directory but it's only one of many factors involved in how well you place in the SE results and not even the most important of those factors. I doubt that it's a "green pass to better positioning" or to anything beyond the Google directory itself.

I have attempted to get listed on DMOZ at least once a year for the last five years - I even attempted to become an editor - Total waste of time . .

Highly unlikely any site would have waited 5 years. Maybe your site was rejected. Have you checked at: http://www.resource-zone.com/ to see why you were not listed?

I am considering becoming a DMOZ editor, any thoughts on this matter?

1) Pick a small category to apply to (no new editor will initially be let loose on a large category)
2) Read instructions very carefully
3) Try for a non-commercial category initially (commercially categors usually get a lot of spam, so experience is prefereed for those categories)
4) The sample sites that you are asked for are important - make sure you pick 3 (no not leave one blank) - follow the instructions for picking the site title and description as per DMOZ guidelines - check the descriptions of sites already in the category ... do not copy them, but follow the style.
5) Declare websites that you are affiliated with - be honest.

Good luck
