Google spider less active?

has anyone else seen the same thing?

Definitely seeing the same thing. It finally visited one of my sites a couple of nights ago, and gobbled for MB's. On the other hand, I had one site (a blog) indexed within two days of launch earlier this month - still trying to figure out what I did right so I can replicate it. :D

But for the most part, the googlebot seems slow to drop by sites, and not very hungry when it gets there. At least that's what I've seen.

Actually, over the last 3 days, I am seeing the opposite on a very new site. I am not ranking well in Google yet but it is only 2 months old and PR 0. The index page was consistently crawled everyday. With every link on the home page crawled every 2 weeks or so. But now over the last 3 days Google has not only crawled deep into the site they have also visited the index page 7 times today and 6 times yesterday. The whole site was due though, but the odd thing is the indexing of the home page 13 times over the last 48 hrs. I hope this translates into a good PR. I am not a firm believer in content getting rankings for competitive keywords but it does help in the frequency of Gbot visits. Especially fresh content.
