gmail privacy

I know scroogle.org and its parent site say that google keeps indefinite record of all your emails sent and, based on their revised privacy policy, make those readily available to government agencies. Is this true? If it is, do people have any recourse? Considering the private nature of some emails, keeping emails after they've been deleted seems a little shady.
Thoughts? Or are some people freaking out over nothing (or a very common practice)?
Also, what about the allegations that google tracks and records every search you make?

I like my gmail account and check it every week or two.

It is great for recieving junk mail, you know like your goning to get when you visit a web site that requires you to supply an e-mail address before you can veiw content.

I like my account with them, and I think they've got a cool service. I was just wondering if anyone else had heard about the stuff I wrote before.

i haven't heard of this although it does sound very shady to me.

i too like my gmail account and will keep this in mind when sending messages in the future
