Default google preferred keyword density range

Pandia's unfair advantage book says google prefers 2 - 4 % keyword density

is this accurate?
are there other ideas on the subject?

No one knows - that Pandia one is an educated guess. Pages with high keyword density can and do rank well. I just make sure that the keyword(s) i am targeting has the highest density on he page, but kept as low as possible and reads/looks natual.
