Default 3 different query results?

So I'm checking Google to see how many pages one of my sites has indexed and I get three different numbers doing 3 different types of query strings. Here's the ones I used:

site:www.example.com
site:www.example.com example
site:www.example.com "example." +"com"

To me, I would think you would get the same amount of indexed pages using using the variations. Maybe someone can explain this to me?

Well, using site: is like a filter that says "the URL must have this in it", and the rest is saying "the PAGE must have this on it"

So, the second query string is like saying:
show me pages from the URL "www.example.com" that contain the word "example".

I still have some doubt in my mind whether Google consider the URL to be part of the page content - they certainly seem to place some ranking value on the keywords being in the URL.
