Default Google "Using Old Index"

I have heard a couple of rumours that currently, Google is using an old version of its index.

Can someone explain this to me?

Surely using an "Old Index" would mean that it is referring to pages that possibly may not exist/be relevant any more?

If the pages that I check in the SERPs have been cached within the last day or 2, and the pages in the Google cache are our current ones, does this mean that it is not using an Old Index?

Any pointers would be very much appreciated.

Thx

If this is the case, I hope it would be temporary, and not a 'New' index. Any thoughts of this being a possibility?

As of late yesterday afternoon (Feb 2), every page in our very respected site got 'reshuffled' in the search results. As I write this, we have had 2% of our normal traffic today so far.

Any thoughts as to how long this change will last?

Google sure is "shuffling" at the moment - I am tracking big changes on some keywords, but small or none on others.

I don't know about others but I know way too many of my old pages are still indexed and the newer ones have not been reflected as I feel they should have by now.

I changed my site over to a new php database type system away from the traditional html almost a year ago. I changed all the links on my main index page so that the new page addresses were reflected. Yet still hundreds of the old pages are still indexed though they are long gone.

Because of this I have put redirects when someone clicks on those pages so that it tells them of the change and that things have beenm moved to the new system.

Last week in a WebPro newsletter it said that redirects could be hurting my ranking on the search engine. I have noticed a significant lowering in my usual high rankings.

It is very disappointing. Good thing for website loyalty of my users and word of mouth advertising.

I noticed that even the new MSN search engine has these pages indexed as well. Which I find very strange.

I saw someone post somewhere they thought it rolled back to Dec 17.... I don't know though...

Whatever this is, I hope it doesn't stick. It sure didn't do me any good... I lost ground on quit of few keywords.

Google shuffles quite frequently, but it could easily be showing an old index now and by the time you navigate from this post to search, things could be different.

I tend to notice the most shuffeling around pagernak updates either in the directory and.or toolbar.

Things have been shuffling quite a bit lately and I did notice a few changes in the Google directory as far as pagerank and placement.

Lets hope we'll see a full blown pagerank increase soon.

You probably mean "SANDBOX", not "OLD Index".
This is a thing that will kill Google dominance in the years 2005-2006
Google is stale in terms it does not allow new domains in. Old domains are OK with new pages.

Yes. Google seems to be indexing my old design as well as the newer ones. I normally still keep the old design even though I have revamped the site.

I've been adding new pages to multiple web sites over the past two weeks and they have been appearing in Google's index within 2-5 days. Search results were jumping around a bit, but he new pages were making it into the index.

I had exactly the same problem last year for the same reason. What had happened is that I forgot to put in 301 permanent redirects in the .htaccess file (or if you site is hosted in Windows, setup up permanent redirects in IIS). Once I put in the 301 redirects, Google quickly dropped the old URLS and begam showing the new pages.
