Default can site rank high with a high volume of low ranking links?

Hey everyone

I understand that google (or at least I think that I do) places a high value on the number of backlinks and also the rank of the links

Can a website rank high with only a high volume of incoming links?

If so, how many links would it take for a phrase such as "home based business ideas" to be listed on the first page?

thanks

If the links are of a related subject, I think that a site could easily rank well based on the situation.

I think your search term would be difficult to rank for, because it has 2 moderately competitive search phrases in it. "Home Based Business" and "Business Idea".

I would guess that it would take hundreds of good links to rank for this phrase.

Yes, it will help you ranking.

See it this way: Every site that links to you, Low ranking or High ranking is passing a vote to you.

The lower ranking sites have little incrementental voting percentage compared to a high ranking site.

But it is like a Penny bank. Keep at it and it might turn into a Dollar.

And yes, defiantly revelant on topic sites would be best.

I agree that links from "true" high-ranking, relevant sites are worth their weight.

However, remember that all sites had to start somewhere. A highly-relevant PR2, PR3 or PR4 site, may easily turn into PR4, PR5 or PR6 - the next time the big G decides to twist/push/pull their "algorithm button".

Remember - only use the toolbar as a very, very rough guide of a site's importance.
Just ask yourself if you would use the site that you are trying to get a link from.

thanks fellas for help

how much does it matter (if anything at all) that all the backlinks that I am able to get are from directories at the moment?

I am assuming that actual "content" websites carry more weight than directories. Is this true?

and my site is one of those that is just starting out.

thanks
