Default Google Adword

I see Google Adword links on every page of every site I visit.
Is this the 'thing' to do?
How can they really keep the links from taking your visitors to competitors?

--
Is it better to make one page with all the links, or to put links that relate to a particular page on that page. And is Google Adword the best choice for these types of links?
--

Do links to other sites really help that much?

--
How do you know how a site ranks without having to take their word for it?

:)

The only reason you see Google Ads on so many webpages is because webmasters make money off them. If google didn't pay out, nobody would use them...

If you sell services or products, I would stear clear from putting google ads on your pages. By putting google ads on your pages you're basically advertising for your competitors for free. Not to mention, your customers are likely to click the ads - thus leaving your site and you losing their business.

Google ads also work off your content on the page. So if the page is about "motorcyles", the ads displayed would be about motorcyles.

I'll just add that you can set up "filters", basically removing ads for your competators from your site and leaving only "complimentary" ads.

That said, like bbot pointed out, I wouldn't put them on a "sales" site because it could destract from what you are trying to get your site's visitors to do: buy your stuff.
