Explain me if you can this problem pls!!!!!!!!

In October 2004 a friend uploaded a new travel site. He optimized it and he was in the most of the keywords from 200-300 rank. At 14/12/04it dissapeared from google for two days.
At 16/12/04 suddenly the site appeared again in the same rank from 200-300.

At 20/12/04 the rankings were at top page(1st page and 2nd page) in various keywords. He enjoyed those rankings for a week and then back to 200-300 rank till today.

Can somenone explain him this or happened to anyone.

There have been plenty of threads here in the last 4 week of the ups and down in Google. Without the URL its hard to say specifically.
